AMLWCH TOWN JUNIORS F.C. UNDER12's HIT TOP SPOT FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS SEASON 06 March 2010

Amlwch Town Juniors F.C. Under 12’s came out 3 – 1 winners in their away match against Bodedern today. Even though Bodedern had lost the previous week 9 – 0 against Holyhead, Amlwch knew they would be in for a tough match, especially after last weeks set back against Menai Bridge.

With confidence down and fatigue starting to show in the last week and with changes forced upon the team the Coaching staff were glad to see Amlwch take a 1 – 0 lead quite early on with Tom Wyn cutting down the left and crossing for Cai Owen to head home from close range.

Amlwch were comfortable throughout the first half with the back four of Rhodri Hughes, Jack Griffiths (vice Captain), Daniel Hughes (Captain) and Ben Roberts (who is usually our main Striker) solid and in control throughout, and with Patrick Fairburn busting a gut in Central Midfield especially after the early loss of Thomas Hughes.

Early changes saw Conner Short taking to the field (Left Midfield) to replace Thomas Hughes who had been suffering from illness. This meant rearranging slightly with Captain Daniel Hughes stepping into midfield and Ben Eynon filling in at Right Back.
Amlwch continued to pressure and when Tom Wyn fouled after forcing his way into their penalty boxed the referee had no alternative but to award a penalty. Up stepped vice Captain Jack Griffiths to confidently slot home and make it 2 – 0. Amlwch should have possibly taking more advantage of all their pressure and lacked the killer instinct to punish their opponents, but Bodedern weren’t here just to sit back and fought like tigers to stay in the Match.

The second half was a different story altogether, although Amlwch started well enough kicking up field they lacked the cohesion and teamwork of the first half and Bodedern took full advantage of this and bossed the game.

Ben Roberts who had slotted in well at Centre Half had to be withdrawn early into the second half which saw more changes; Dylan Pell slotting into Left back with Rhodri Jones moving to an unaccustomed Centre Back role. Bodedern started to boss the midfield and cracks started to show all over the park, but Amlwch put up a dogged fight to keep their 2 -0 lead but just lacked the killer 3rd goal.

Ben Roberts replaced Ben Parker up front with 15 minutes to go in the hope that we could take the pressure off our defence. With 11 minutes to go Amlwch introduced Ryan Evans for his first start of the season, replacing Cai Owen up front.

With 10 minutes left on the clock Amlwch were surprised to see influential player Jordan Taylor go in goal for Bodedern, but what happened next can only be described as goal of the season for any League and would be shown again and again on Match of the Day. Jordan received the ball in his own 18 yard boxed and instead of picking it up and hoofing it down field decided to go walkabout. He left his 18 yard box and set off down the right wing and as he reached the halfway line everyone looked on in amazement, especially Amlwch’s Coaching Staff seeing as their team had froze and didn’t put a tackle in. As he reached the edge of our penalty box panic set in and players desperately tried to stop him and when Harvey Williams came off his line Jordan cheekily chipped the ball over his head to score what can only be described as an absolutely wonderful goal.

This caused panic in the ranks and within minutes Bodedern broke again and were unlucky not to score a second when a shot just inside the penalty box hit the cross bar and luckily for Amlwch Ben Eynon was at hand to clear the danger.

With 2 minutes to go Amlwch’s Thomas Hughes re-entered the action replacing Rhodri Hughes with the hope he could put his foot on the ball and take control of the midfield. Amlwch finally decide to work Bodedern and play the ball over their defence, turning them towards their goal. Ben Eynon work the line up the right hand side with 3 to 4 throw ins whilst Conner Short covered him at Right Back and when Thomas Hughes received the ball at the edge of Bodedern’s 18 yard and goal line he had only one thing on his mind which was to cross into the box and with the last kick of the game his cross shot hit the back of the net giving Amlwch a not so comfortable 3 -1 victory.

Bodedern were unlucky not to get their first points of the season and probably deserved a draw and with Llanfairpwll beating Holyhead, Amlwch now go back to the Top of the League with a crucial match away against Holyhead on 20/03/10, but with Llanfairpwll 2 points behind with 2 games remaining it is out of our hands…
